Email sent to racers 10/15/21

We  wanted to send out a few important race reminders regarding The Savage Adventure Race this Sunday.

Please review and check the updated team list for accuracy. We have received many changes and adjustment emails  recently, and the names are beginning to blur together on the computer screenJ

Give it a double check per favore. While you are there, take notice of your team number. It will make things go faster at registration if you tell the volunteers your team category, bib # and team name.

Please review all the race information here: http://goalsara.org/2021-races/the-savage-ar-2021/race-updates/

We’ve added a brief Adventure Racing tutorial session for NEW racers only. This will be from 8:40-9am near the registration area.

WEATHER:  We are expecting a sunny but Chilly day. Please prepare accordingly. More than likely you will get wet in some capacity on the paddle. Bring extra dry clothes.

There are 200+ racers joining in for the adventure on Sunday. Let’s make it a smooth start by sticking to the following:

  • Arrive in ONE team vehicle.  You may transition out of this vehicle, or set up in the designated grassy area near the canoe launch
  • Send one team mate to the  registration table with SIGNED waivers for all team members. You can print these out ahead of time, and we will have paper copies at the registration area
    http://goalsara.org/2021-races/the-savage-ar-2021/race-updates/
  • COVID precautions: Please wear a mask when we are in large gatherings (registration, team meeting, etc). You may opt to wear your mask on the race course.  Please socially distance wisely.
  • Be nice to our volunteers – they are a mix of adventure racers, Civil Air Patrol Volunteers, High School Band helpers, and just generally super nice people giving up their personal time to help.
  • We are sharing the park with the public, including potential equestrian riders. Always yield to other park users and be nice!!!

Please review the time schedule. We want to start the races on time (fingers crossed)

6 HOUR RACERS ONLY:

You MUST have a rear red light and a front projecting white light on your bikes for the bike section. (you can duct tape, wrap a flashlight, whatever – just have those safety lights)

Travel on any roads MUST be in single file at all times.

Bring about 6 foot of rope that you don’t care if it gets wet. We will have a limited amount of rope available for teams. Cost = a donation to our fundraiser.

Speaking of fundraiser – be sure to check out the fundraising page. Spread the word!  We are half way to our $ goal for the forest planting in memory of Bill Gibbons, co-founder of GOALS ARA

Email sent to Racers 10/5/21

Hello racers!

We are quickly approaching The Savage  Adventure Race! Our course designer, Ron Barron, has been working hard to put together a great event for you!

All of the information you need is located on the pdf here: http://goalsara.org/2021-races/the-savage-ar-2021/

BUT there are some details that we want to make sure to bring to your attention in this email.

Please check the team list for accuracy.  Email us with any changes.  In particular, check if your team is in the open or masters division.
On race day, if there is only one team registered in a masters category, that team will be moved to the open division

PARKING
WE ARE EXTREMELY LIMITED IN PARKING.  IN ORDER FOR THIS EVENT TO BE A SUCCESS, WE NEED EVERYONE’S COOPERATION.

Event parking is the overflow lot at the Western Boat Launch. This is a dirt/grass lot.

Teams may arrive in only  ONE team vehicle. We realize this is a bit of an inconvenience, and we truly thank you for your cooperation.

There are options available to you – please plan ahead!!

1: PARK AND RIDE: Teams meet at the pool area on the East side of the park, then drive to the west side of the park in ONE vehicle. Map and directions are below. This is about a 15 minute car ride from the east side to the west side. PLAN ACCORDINGLY.

2. If you cannot do that because of bike rack limitations, you may drop off your bike at the start/finish area – then ride over and meet your team mates at the east boat launch. Again, we realize this is not ideal, but we are working within the constraints of event/public parking in a small area.

PARK AND RIDE Carpool area: Marsh Creek Swimming Pool 675 Park Road, Downingtown, PA
https://goo.gl/maps/pSK7ZxPhNjeqGSEA9

Upon entering east side of park on Park Road,  go past park office, go past lake parking and turn left up the hill to the top – there is a large lot where you may park wherever you wish.

After parking and meeting your team mates, lock and secure your vehicles. Our volunteers will NOT be patrolling that area.

Proceed to the

Start/Finish/ area =  ONE team vehicle: Marsh Creek State Park Boat Launch, Western Side

COVID

Masks are to be worn when around crowded areas at the start/finish line, team meeting. Masks are optional when on race course. Please use respect and social distance from other race participants and the public.
Hand sanitizer is being provided in your goodie bags, compliments of the Chester County Tourism Bureau. Please send ONE member of your team to pick up registration bags and hand in waiver forms.

6 HR RACERS
Pay attention to the gear list: red flashing light, white projecting light, 6+ foot of rope that can get wet is MANDATORY

VOLUNTEERS:   If you have any family or friends that would like to help out they are more than welcome. We could use a few more helping hands early morning for parking and later afternoon for finish line scoring. In addition, if folks are available to clean up CP flags post race that is always appreciated! 20% off a future event for helping out J

TRANSITION AREA & PADDLE INFORMATION
There is a central transition area where you will return to between each leg of the race. Racers may transition out of their vehicles, or set up a person area in the grass near the canoe TA
Please note, that volunteers are not responsible for the security of your items.

PADDLES – For those using rental equipment we will provide the paddles and pfd’s for you, and they will be at the boat launch with the canoes. You may also choose to bring your own paddles and pfd.

What to expect for the race format?
At check in you will receive your race map. When the race begins there will be an opening activity where you will receive your race passport. This will determine your race order: bike, foot, paddle 1st. Teams rotate throughout the day. The 3 and 6 hr race formats are slightly different, which will be explained at the team meeting morning of the race.

The race is points based scoring. This means that each checkpoint has a certain point value. Your team has up to 3 or 6 hours to collect as many points as you can. Your strategy may include skipping some points, or trying to go for all of them.

If you are over the 3 or 6 hour time limit, your team loses points. . If a team is one minute late (you have up to 6 hours 59 seconds) your highest point will be deducted. The next highest point will be deducted every 5 minutes thereafter. (6 hours 6 minutes, 12 hours 11 minutes, etc.)   In other words---don’t be late!
