Race Report

The Edge Adventure Races Completes the 2008 GOALS ARA Season

Having produced 5 years of adventure races, the race directors were excited about the 2008 race finale--The GOALS ARA Championship and The Edge Sprint Race. Guest course designer, Jonathan Neely (aka Dr. Evil) put together a great course for both the open division as well as the championship teams.

The GOALS ARA championship was open to coed teams of 3 who had placed in the top 10 in 2 previous 2008 GOALS ARA races. Five teams met this criteria, and 4 teams took up the challenge of the championship. The teams had up to 6 hours to complete the rogaine style course. The opening event started out with a team challenge of the good old fashion wheel barrel race with their teams. When they completed that challenge they receive their race passports. Then they were off to the canoe section. About a 1/2 mile run later they arrived at the lake to find all their boats had been submerged! Ah that Dr Evil! Bailers in hand, the teams dredged out their canoes and hit the lake hard.

After the canoe section the 4 teams split up in different directions; bike, foot, or team challenges. The foot section had a memorable addition of a memory 'O'. At foot checkpoint # 6 the team maps were taken away, and they had to navigate to 4 foot checkpoints by memory. This section had the highest points of the race- 50 pts each.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, the open division was also chugging along a similar but a bit less challenging race course. Team challenges included an obstacle course with cargo net, high wire, low crawl, and buddy carry. Teams of 2-3 had up to 6 hours to complete their rogaine style race with 5 canoe points, 6 foot points and 8 mountain biking points. A few swamped canoes during the race kept our water rescue team on their toes, and added a bit of a fun chill to the team's race.

Special guests included two 11 year old racers--who did quite well! We were also happy to welcome our military teams, US Naval Academy Teams, West Point Teams, Princeton Teams, and U Penn Wharton School of Business Teams.

The race ended in smiles, pasta salad, and our world famous meatball sandwiches. Congratulations to all who raced!

A special thanks goes out to our volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the weekend!

Thank you to our great sponsors, especially REI and Trail Creek Outfitters. Many thanks to REI for the bike tech tent and all their support this year!

Great job ARMD on their Championship Win!!!!
